St Neots 1s made a great start to their campaign following promotion with a 3-1 win over Ely City. Saints were on top from the off and led after five minutes when last season’s top scorer, Phil McMorris finished. Saints weren’t in the lead for long when a fortunate Ely shot deflected up and over keeper Ben Seaber. The visitors continued to dominate the play though and were back ahead through Captain Mike Hornby. Saints looked the better side in the second half but struggled to find a third. Despite late pressure from Ely, McMorris was able to get his second and Saints wrapped up the win.
The men’s 2s also picked up an opening day win, beating Cambridge Nomads 3s 3-0 at home. Mark Lincoln opened the scoring for Saints, before James Findlay and Andrew Pope also found the net. The 3s and 4s were both beaten on the road. The 3s were comfortably beaten 8-0 by Ely City 2s while the 4s narrowly missed out on a point, losing 2-1 to City of Peterborough 8s. William Clarke with the goal.
The women’s 1s also made a great start to their season, thumping Long Sutton 5-0 at home, as they look to bounce back up after relegation last season. Saints pressed high from the start and regularly tested the visitors. Ella Roberts opened the scoring from a short corner, before Louise Taylor carried the ball from Saints’ own quarter and fired home the second. The high press was working for Saints and they got their third before half time when Kira Herbert slotted past the keeper. The dominant display continued for Saints in the second half and despite the pressure, they were only able to claim two more goals. Roberts and Herbert both converted from short corners for their second each.
The 2s had a difficult start to their campaign, losing 4-1 away to Cambridge City 4s. Aoife Stokes scored their only goal. Following their promotion last season and the 1s relegation, they find themselves in the same division. The two face each other next weekend.
The 3s picked up a 2-0 win at home to Haverhill 1s. Goals from Millie Al-Ali and Lizell Heather meant that all three teams playing at home earned wins and clean sheets. The new look 4s development side narrowly lost to another new side in Huntingdon’s own development team. Jay Dickinson and Amy Harley scored the goals in the 3-2 loss.
